Know the Processor / CPU on Android

The performance of a true smartphone is determined from the processor contained in the device, including Android. The role of the processor is so crucial, because its function is to control the running of the system in a smartphone. Let's share and get to know the processor on Android.

Currently the type of processor on the market is released by various manufacturers with variations in shape, size, speed and capacity. In the previous article, Droid tips discussed the differences between single core and multi core on Android

Along with the increasing number of Android smartphone users, it has triggered requests for processors. According to data from Strategic Analyst , demand for smartphone chipsets is increasing rapidly.

Android processor type
Exynos
This processor was developed by Samsung Electronics which was built on a System on a Chip (SoC) base specifically for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. The first released Exynos was 3110 or previously known as Hummingbird or S5PC110. After exynos 3110, Samsung re-launched Exynos 4212, which uses a dual core ARM Cortex A9 CPU with a clock between 1.2 GHz to 1.5 GHz and is equipped with ARM Mali-400 MP4 GPU. The advantages offered by this CPU are multitasking, 3D game features and saving because it is built with the High K Metal Gate 45nm, 32nm and 28nm processes. If you want to find out more about Exynos, you can read  Wikipedia  and the  official Samsung Exynos site .

OMAP
OMAP is a processor produced by Texas Instrument, currently available OMAP 1 up to OMAP 4. Processor OMAP 4 is the first step of Texas instrument dual core version. The OMAP processor is also often used by reliable performance smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Huawei ascend P1 S to Archos tablets. OMAP excellence is able to provide and process site views on the internet like a website on a PC, user interface is faster with less power consumption, supports primary and secondary cameras is stronger and capable of displaying Full HD video. If you want to find out more about OMAP, you can read  wikipedia  and the  official OMAP instrument site .

Tegra
This nvidia product processor is very advanced because it first releases quad core while other manufacturers are still producing dual cores. The quad core product is the Nvidia Tegra 3 which is built using the ARM Cortex A9 architecture with a maximum 1.4GHz core. This processor has the advantage of being able to display image quality with minimum power consumption, besides this processor is also capable of playing videos with large resolutions. If you like to play games and play videos, maybe Tegra is the right choice for you. If you want to find out more about Tegra, you can read  wikipedia  and the  official site nvidia Tegra .

Snapdragon
Snapdragon is a type of processor made by Qualcomm that is most widely used for Android smartphones, this processor capability is claimed by many parties better than other processors and until this article I wrote. Until now, Qualcomm has launched several generations of Snapdragon with a variety of capabilities. If you want to find out more about Snapdragon, you can read  wikipedia  and  official site qualcomm Snapdragon .

MediaTek
MediaTek or better known as MTK is a semiconductor company and sells components for wireless communication devices. In Taiwan, mediatek is the largest chip maker and also includes the largest semiconductor company, while in the smartphone chipset sector, according to strategic analytic data, mediatek is ranked third after Snapdragon and Exynos. Besides having a variety of advantages, mediatek processors are known as processors at low prices but have amazing quality. If you want to find out more about MediaTek, you can read the  wikipedia  and the  MediaTek official site .

PXA
This processor is a product from marvell, although it is rarely used but the processor is also used on smartphones both android devices and other platforms. The processor also uses SoC technology. If you want to find out more about the PXA family, you can read on Marvell's official site .

System On a Chip (SoC)
Processor on android uses SoC, what is the SoC?
A SoC, or system-on-a-chip, integrates almost all components into a single silicon chip.
Along with the CPU, a SoC usually contains a GPU (graphics processor), memory, USB controller, power management circuit, and wireless radio (WiFi, 3G, 4G LTE, etc.). While the CPU cannot function without dozens of other chips, it is possible to build a smartphone only  with a  single SoC.

Difference between CPU and SoC
The advantage of SoC is its size, besides that the SoC contains more functionality. If you use a CPU, it will be very difficult if you use a CPU and some other supporting chips on a smartphone that is relatively small in size, we can put a complete computer on smartphones and tablets, and still have plenty of space for batteries when using SoC.

Because of the very high level of integration, the SoC also uses less power, besides if you use a CPU, then you need a number of physical chips meaning that it is much cheaper to build a smartphone using SoC than the CPU. You can read some further explanations on  wikipedia .

Often we hear the term ARM, what is ARM?
ARM stands for Advanced RISC Machine, a processor architecture that uses 32-bit RISC processors and is developed by ARM Limited. ARM processor architecture is widely used by handheld devices considering its features are made optimal for handheld devices, such as energy-saving features that make it dominant in the market of handheld electronic devices including Android.
If you want to read more about ARM you can read on wikipedia , and some lists of devices that use ARM you can read on XDA .

Android CPU Governors
What are CPU Governors?
CPU Governors on android controls how the CPU increases and decreases frequency in response to user activity on their devices. CPU Governors are very important in smartphones and tablets because they have a large impact on the apparent fluidity of the interface and battery life of the device.
NOTE: You cannot change the CPU Governors unless your android device is in the ROOT position and you have a ROM or application that allows you to make changes. Also, different kernels (intermediate software between your mobile hardware and operating system) offer different sets of CPU Governors.
